Taco Bell Drops Enchirito Price to $1, Removes Lettuce Following Parasite Scare

Published Jul 22, 2026

Summary:
  • Taco Bell is selling a lettuce-free Enchirito for $1 after a cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded lettuce.
  • Yum! Brands shares fell more than 9% since July 10, 2026, the date health authorities tied Taco Bell to the outbreak.
  • Taylor Farms recalled products in 27 states after the FDA linked the lettuce to the parasite.

Why Taco Bell Cut the Lettuce and the Price

A cyclospora outbreak affecting Taco Bell locations in multiple states was traced back to shredded lettuce from Taylor Farms. Products shipped to 27 states were recalled by Taylor Farms. Public-health authorities formally tied the chain to the outbreak on July 10, 2026, and since then customer traffic has taken a hit.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms; past outbreaks have been linked to contaminated fresh produce. Taco Bell's decision to temporarily remove lettuce from the Enchirito and offer it at a steep discount is a direct response to the health scare, aiming to restore customer confidence quickly.

The company immediately removed all shredded lettuce from its locations after the contamination was discovered. Then Taco Bell did something unusual - it launched a promotional version of a menu item that leaves out the very ingredient linked to the problem.

It is also offering $1 nacho fries.

CEO Sean Tresvant wrote on LinkedIn, "We want to "be transparent about what we know and what we are doing next"." He added, "We aren't entitled to your loyalty. We earn it one meal at a time."

The chain hasn't announced an end date for the $1 Enchirito offer, but pairing a steep discount with a visible removal of the suspect ingredient is a deliberate strategy to regain consumer trust. While the stock saw a modest uptick of 1.1% on the day the promotion was announced, the broader decline of more than 9% since July 10 reflects the damage done to consumer confidence during the outbreak period.

The outbreak's impact extended beyond immediate sales. Data from Morning Consult indicated a substantial erosion of consumer trust, and the 9% share price fall since July 10 underscores the economic cost. Taco Bell's promotional efforts are a direct attempt to reverse this trend.

Past cyclospora outbreaks have typically been traced to imported produce that was contaminated, resulting in extensive recalls and temporary menu adjustments. Taco Bell's swift removal of shredded lettuce and price promotion mirrors industry crisis management tactics used by other fast-food chains after similar scares.

Similar health scares have hit other fast-food chains in the past. For example, a 2018 cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated salad mix affected multiple restaurant chains, leading to widespread recalls and a temporary drop in consumer traffic. Taco Bell's strategy of offering a discounted product without the suspect ingredient follows a proven playbook for rebuilding trust quickly after a contamination event.

The Stock Tells the Story

Yum! Brands, Taco Bell's parent company, has felt the sting. Shares were up 1.1% at 12:20 p.m. on the day the promotion was announced, a small bounce.

Morning Consult, a research firm, has been polling consumer trust after the outbreak. More consumers now report having little or no trust in the chain, according to Morning Consult's polling.
