Enrollment snapshot
Certificate programs did the heavy lifting this spring, climbing 12.1% from a year ago. That brought in 82,873 additional students and lifted total certificate enrollment to 767,662. Associate-degree programs expanded too, adding 60,274 students for a 1.5% increase, and now sit just shy of 4.2 million students.
Community colleges overall advanced 3.1% year over year, outpacing the 1.0% rise across higher education. Compared with the prior two spring terms, growth has eased; in 2024, increases were 4.7%, and in 2025 they were 5.1%. Most sectors also posted smaller increases this spring than in those two years.
Where the growth is - and is not
Dual enrollment kept pushing numbers higher. At community colleges, it rose 11.4% this spring, up by 103,056 students and now above 1 million. For context, the prior spring saw a 4.3% increase of 37,341 students, and spring 2024 recorded a 9.9% rise for 78,531 students.
Gains showed up across different community college missions. High transfer-focused colleges were up 5.5%, high vocational colleges increased 2.8%, and mixed transfer colleges grew 1.8%. As Matthew Holsapple, senior director of research, said, "Students are continuing to see the community college as a viable pathway into that four-year degree."

Program by program, two-year colleges' health professions enrollments rose 7.1% with 53,628 more students, and also continued to increase at four-year and primarily associate-degree-granting baccalaureate institutions. Enrollment in mechanical and repair technologies and technician programs climbed 9.8%, an increase of 11,934 students. At community colleges, the biggest field remains the humanities along with liberal arts and sciences and general studies, now totaling 1.4 million students after a 1.3% increase, which equals 18,766 additional students. Computer and information science enrollment at community colleges fell 11.2%, down 24,679, echoing declines across institution types.
Who is enrolling, and where
White student enrollment at community colleges slipped 1.1% by 21,688, dropping below 2 million. Hispanic student enrollment continued its post Covid increase, up 6.5% by 89,088 to about 1.4 million, compared with 1.1 million in spring 2022. Black students rose 4.2% by 29,828 to 740,343.
Urban campuses make up 51.5% of total community college enrollment, totaling 2.9 million students, and posted growth of 5.7%. Rural colleges, with 590,540 students, increased 7.4%. Part-time enrollment continued to outpace full time, up 3.3% to 3.8 million, while full-time enrollment rose 2.6% by 50,067 to almost 2 million.
Why it matters for investors
Headcounts are shifting in visible ways. Certificates are growing faster than associate degrees, dual enrollment now tops 1 million, and the biggest field remains liberal arts and sciences at 1.4 million. Health professions and mechanical and repair technologies posted notable gains, while computer and information science contracted. The bottom line: community colleges grew faster than the overall sector this spring, and where students choose to enroll is moving.
