Roblox User Growth Slows Due to Child Safety Upgrades, Stock Drops

Roblox User Growth Slows Due to Child Safety Upgrades, Stock Drops
Summary:
  • Roblox reported 123 million daily active users in Q2, missing analyst forecasts of 128.7 million.
  • The company's stock has fallen about 40% since January, closing at a low on July 30.
  • Roblox attributes the shortfall to child-safety upgrades that reduced user activity, and faces potential EU regulation as a "very large online platform."

The Numbers That Missed

Roblox had a rough second quarter, and the numbers tell the story.

The company reported 123 million daily active users. Analysts had projected 128.7 million daily active users. The company's bookings, which reflect sales, totaled $1.56 billion, similarly missing the $1.6 billion that analysts anticipated.

So what went wrong? The company pointed to the dozens of safety changes it has been rolling out. Roblox has added age-verification tools and other measures meant to protect kids from predators.

The changes have crimped customer engagement and slowed growth.

As of the market close on July 30, Roblox's stock had declined about 40% since the start of 2025.

The safety measures come amid growing scrutiny from regulators and parents. Roblox has faced criticism over its moderation of harmful content and its ability to protect young users from online predators. The company has invested heavily in automated moderation tools and human review teams, but these efforts have also had the side effect of reducing the number of interactions and sessions per user, as flagged by the company's own disclosures.

Why Growth Slowed Beyond Safety

The safety changes are not the only thing weighing on Roblox. There is a content problem too. In 2025, Roblox saw a spike in user activity driven by hit games such as the theft-themed "Steal A Brainrot" and the gardening simulation "Grow A Garden." In the period since, no fresh games have attained comparable popularity.

Nick McKay, an analyst at Freedom Capital Markets, observed that while "new entrants" appeared in Roblox's top 10 games list during the second quarter, "those titles appear to be largely replacing the figures of the incumbents, as opposed to actually expanding the platform."

Roblox sees it differently. In a shareholder letter, the company said, "Despite near-term monetization headwinds, our platform is more diversified than ever and we continue to observe a consistent velocity of new top titles."

The company also faces a looming regulatory shift. Roblox now has more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU, a milestone that could soon subject it to tighter oversight and monitoring obligations under the bloc's content moderation framework. According to an insider who spoke to Bloomberg News, the European Commission is set to label Roblox a "very large online platform" under the Digital Services Act. The classification could be announced as early as August.

What Comes Next for Your Portfolio

Roblox expects that these safety improvements will attract more users to its platform in the long run. In May, Roblox also approved its first stock buyback plan, aiming to repurchase as much as $3 billion of its shares, with $1 billion allocated for the initial year.

Currently, Roblox accounts for approximately 4% of worldwide gaming revenue.
