What Al‑Thani said in New York

Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York on Sunday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al‑Thani called for regional teamwork to dial down the crisis. "We are hoping this war is a wake-up call for everyone," he said. "We have to act together responsibly as a region." The Qatar Economic Forum is Powered by Bloomberg, and Qatar's government underwrites the event.

Mediation and next steps

Al‑Thani said messages are moving between the US and Iran, pointing out that Qatar has played a leading intermediary role. In an interview with Bloomberg's Mishal Husain, he pressed Gulf countries to "step up responsibly to stop their saboteurs, stop their troublemakers," and added that resolving the US‑Iran confrontation will take more peacemakers.

Diplomatic moves this week

Gulf leaders are looking to meet President Donald Trump around the UN General Assembly this week, with Washington pressing to reach an accord with Iran that would restart energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told Fox News Sunday he would likely be open to meeting Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and noted that he is expected to be in New York for the UN gathering.
