Profound nabs $180M at $1.8B to tune marketing for AI chatbots

Summary:
  • Profound raised $180 million in a Series D, valuing the New York startup at $1.8 billion.
  • Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins co-led; total funding now tops $335 million.
  • Founded in 2024, Profound builds tools that help brands show up correctly in answers from AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini.

The deal and the investors

Profound plans to announce on Tuesday that it closed a $180 million Series D round at a $1.8 billion valuation. Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins co-led the financing, with participation from existing backers Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures. Sequoia led the Series B in August 2025, and Kleiner Perkins led the Series A announced two months earlier.

Just six months ago, the company raised $96 million at a $1 billion valuation. With the new round, Profound has now pulled in more than $335 million to date.

What the product does

Profound started with tools that quantify how often AI models mention a brand, the context in which it shows up, and the descriptions those systems provide. The pitch sits at the center of the shift from classic SEO to what many call answer engine optimization, where the aim is to shape how AI tools respond to a person's question rather than jockey for a higher web page placement. Tweaking chatbot outputs involves more moving parts, where qualities like clarity and perceived authority matter more than stuffing in trendy keywords.

Consumers are also testing AI agents, including Meta Platforms' newly introduced Muse, that behave like digital assistants and complete errands for people, such as placing grocery orders or lining up a rental car. Profound is leaning into that trend by putting more emphasis on tracking agent behavior across the web.

Agents, integrations, and the team

Profound has released its own agents that it says work alongside marketing teams, taking on some tasks people used to handle. The newest capabilities can continuously review brand presence across AI searches and, when issues such as a decline in mentions pop up, the system can suggest and carry out fixes.

The platform also links into customers' internal tools, including Gmail and Slack, so agents can do things like draft memos in the company's voice. To help clients get the most from these features, Profound employs "forward-deployed marketing engineers." Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer James Cadwallader described the role as a marketer who harnesses AI to amplify their impact, saying it "is becoming one of the most important roles in marketing, and this platform we built is for them." Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Dylan Babbs said part of the fresh capital will go toward hiring more engineers for in-house AI research to boost performance and lower costs.

Growth, customers, and the competitive landscape

Profound says its workforce has roughly quadrupled since the beginning of the year, from about 90 people to nearly 400. While it declined to disclose current revenue, the company said sales have tripled since its February round. Customers include Comcast, Microsoft and SpaceX's Cursor.

Big names like Salesforce and Adobe still rule the enterprise marketing stack, but a wave of startups is rebuilding the category around AI. That ranges from Clay, valued at $7.1 billion, which began in sales and, last year, broadened its offering to serve marketing departments, to Higgsfield AI, a video generation platform aimed at corporate social media marketers.

Cadwallader said Profound sees itself as the default marketing software for the AI age. The company's long term view is that marketers will oversee fleets of AI agents that can surface brand visibility problems or openings and act on them on their own. For your budget, that trend line points to marketing tools getting more autonomous and, ideally, more accountable for results.

Why RAM Prices Are Soaring - and Where the Money Is Moving
  • Memory chips - the RAM inside phones, laptops, fridges, and trucks - are in a shortage Tim Cook called a 100-year flood, and some memory prices have climbed about 90% in a single quarter.
  • Four forces hit at once: AI demand, a production shutdown in 2023, build times that push any fix to 2028 at the earliest, and a bombed helium plant in Qatar.
  • The last two supply shocks ended in aggressive Fed rate hikes and market drops of around 45% and 20%, and this time Washington is spending heavily to bring memory production home.

How Is the Economy Doing? Washington Says It's Fixed, but the Numbers Don't Agree
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the economy is fixed because lower earners' incomes are now rising faster than top earners'.
  • The Atlanta Fed and Bank of America show different numbers, and Hilton, Marriott, and McDonald's can't agree on what they're seeing either.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

  • On September 9, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rolled out an emergency plan for the government to lend money to itself. Ray Dalio now says the dollar has roughly three years before real pain.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.
  • The tradeoff is real: you give up some upside, and the two key numbers to check are maximum drawdown and correlation to the market.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
