What OpenAI announced
OpenAI added Paul Christiano to the board of its nonprofit foundation and placed him on the board's Safety and Security Committee, a body responsible for steering companywide protocols on high-stakes issues at the ChatGPT maker. He is also set to attend meetings of the for-profit board as a non-voting observer. OpenAI said he will recuse himself from anything related to the company in his CAISI capacity, as well as from all model evaluations.
Who Christiano is and why the pick matters
At the Commerce Department's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), Christiano serves as a senior technical adviser, where the team runs evaluations and crafts guidance for AI models. He is widely seen as an expert on alignment - the work of keeping AI systems operating in line with human goals - and previously served on rival Anthropic's nonprofit trust before stepping down in 2024.
Why now
The episode turned up the volume on questions about how quickly AI is moving and whether enough safeguards are in place. "AI capabilities have advanced very rapidly in the last year and alignment remains a difficult technical problem, making the Safety and Security Committee's responsibility more important and more challenging than ever," Christiano said in a statement Wednesday.

What this means for the foundation and your wallet
On the nonprofit side, Christiano will help oversee the foundation's charitable work. After OpenAI's restructuring last year, that foundation received a 26% stake in the for-profit public benefit corporation, and it has already committed funds to efforts such as applying AI to public health research. Also on the nonprofit board are Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, Bret Taylor in the role of chairman, and Paul Nakasone, a retired US Army General. For everyday investors, the headline is simple: a leading alignment voice now has visibility into OpenAI's philanthropy and governance, a sign that risk management is getting more airtime as AI races ahead.
