Talks pick up after a July blueprint
OpenAI confirmed it has been in ongoing conversations with Anthropic and Google on how to work together on safety issues. A spokesperson said the dialogue has been active since July, when Demis Hassabis, who chairs Google DeepMind, put forward a U.S.-led "Standards Body." In an essay on X, he outlined setting up either a public private partnership or a self-regulatory group with federal oversight, similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
Rivalry meets rising pressure
Despite competing head to head, the three companies have been under heavy scrutiny over AI safety and security. On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pressed AI companies to ease the rate at which they upgrade their most advanced models.
The Information previously reported on the intercompany talks. According to CNBC, requests for comment went unanswered by Google and by Anthropic at the time.

What OpenAI says it will do next
This month, Chris Lehane - who serves as OpenAI's chief global affairs officer - said the company is pushing forward on "industry-led standards." He added that OpenAI plans to collaborate with additional firms to create a voluntary initiative, "with or without government support." Lehane added, "Any industry-led standards would complement - not replace - mandatory federal safeguards and democratic oversight," and said AI has entered a new phase where "everything should be on the table" including steps that can be taken outside government right now.
