Summary:

  • Meta has blocked over 550,000 accounts of users under 16 since the ban took effect on December 11, 2024.
  • Approximately 330,000 accounts were removed from Instagram, 173,500 from Facebook, and nearly 40,000 from Threads.
  • The company has proposed using age verification tools called Age Keys to ensure safer online experiences for teens.

Overview of the Ban

On December 11, 2024, Australia enacted the Online Safety Amendment Act, which prohibits users under 16 from accessing major social media platforms.

This includes services like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, and Snapchat.

Meta's Response

Following the implementation of the ban, Meta reported that it had blocked approximately 550,000 accounts believed to belong to under-16s between December 4 and December 11, 2024.

The breakdown includes around 330,000 accounts on Instagram, 173,500 on Facebook, and nearly 40,000 on Threads. Meta expressed its commitment to compliance but urged the Australian government to consider alternative solutions.

Proposed Solutions for Online Safety

Meta has suggested the use of age verification tools known as Age Keys. This system would allow users to confirm their age through government-issued IDs, financial information, or digital wallets.

The company emphasized that age verification should also apply to app stores, as many apps that teens use do not have safety measures in place. Meta believes this approach will ensure consistent protections for young users across all platforms.

Government's Perspective and Impact on Teens

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that the ban aims to empower parents and reduce the risk of teens encountering harmful content online.

The ban also shifts the responsibility of monitoring teen social media use from parents to technology companies. However, some young users have found ways to navigate around the ban by using alternative social media platforms that are not blocked or by utilizing VPNs.

Legal Challenges and Wider Implications

Reddit has gone further by launching a legal challenge against the Australian government, claiming that the ban restricts political discourse and can isolate youth from community interactions.

The platform argued that the voices of young people are essential in shaping the opinions of their families and communities.

Looking Ahead

The social media ban for users under 16 in Australia may set a precedent for other countries grappling with the mental health effects of social media on adolescents.

As lawmakers and parents seek solutions, the situation continues to evolve, reflecting broader concerns about online safety and youth well-being.
