What Nodal is building
Nodal Exchange Holdings is seeking to roll out futures that track the going rate to rent Nvidia Corp. semiconductors used for AI work. The contracts would cash settle to benchmarks from data provider Compute Desk, which pools spot rental prices for access to Nvidia's Blackwell and Hopper GPUs. The company is aiming to get these futures up and running before the calendar flips to next year.
Chief Executive Officer Paul Cusenza said Nodal chose to partner with Compute Desk because its benchmarks contain extensive underlying data sourced from real trades and quoted markets. Bloomberg News reported in May that Architect Financial Technologies is also looking to lean on Compute Desk's indexes, and Nodal's move puts a direct challenge on that lane.
The crowd and the clock
This is turning into a busy lane. CME Group has targeted an early October start for compute futures tied to a Silicon Data index, pending regulatory approval. Intercontinental Exchange is preparing its own approach using data from financial infrastructure firm Ornn.
The timing is not entirely in the exchanges' hands. Earlier in August, the White House received a review filing from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that solicited public feedback on compute futures contracts, a procedural step that may slow down listings. Because it holds designated contract market status, Nodal has the ability to self-certify new offerings, including compute futures. Even so, the CFTC reviews those certifications and can delay or deny a listing.

Why this market exists
Companies training and running AI models are increasingly exposed to swings in the price of compute. Nodal thinks it can differentiate by letting AI focused firms manage two risks in one place: what they pay for computing time and what they pay for electricity. "With AI ascending, there are a lot of people who now are going to be looking at two types of price risks that they weren't looking at before," Cusenza said.
He noted that while the same buyers are scrambling to secure both compute and power, those prices do not always move together. Where there is overlap, Nodal plans to reflect that in portfolio margining so positions in electricity and compute can offset, reducing the cash customers must post.
The backdrop is huge spending and growing demand. Technology companies have pledged to spend trillions of dollars to expand AI infrastructure, a wave of investment that could push up both power and compute costs over the coming decade. BloombergNEF projects data center demand could reach 194 gigawatts by 2035.
What it means for your money
Nodal already runs electricity futures and options across hundreds of locations in North America, and Cusenza said that depth means there are sufficient financial counterparties to take on risk at the exchange. He also serves as chairman of Nodal Clear, which clears for Nodal Exchange and Coinbase Derivatives Exchange, and prior to his tenure at Nodal he held the titles of co-president and co-founder at 23andMe, Inc. For anyone with exposure to AI workloads or the energy that feeds them, the rise of compute futures is a sign that the market is starting to put real prices on these inputs. That makes it easier to see, and potentially manage, how AI demand could flow through to your costs.
