Ramp-Up And What LAR Is Buying
Lobito Atlantic Railway is pushing a fast capacity build after its first draw from the $753 million facility. CEO Nicolas Fournier said a "very aggressive ramp-up" is underway, directing money to new wagons and containers, fixing the line, and tightening coordination between Angola and Congo. In his words: "We are buying a lot of new wagons, new containers, repairing the line, and making sure that the coordination between Angola and Congo is working better."
Recent Traffic, Disruptions, And Repairs
July marked the company's best month on record, with 27,000 tons of international cargo moved as service recovered from floods that had forced a two‑month trucking detour around a 1.5‑kilometer damaged stretch. Technical slow zones have fallen sharply, too. Sections where trains must reduce speed are now about 12 to 15, down from 110 when Fournier took over roughly 15 months ago.
Financing, Flows, And Geopolitics
Looking ahead, the company expects to roughly double volumes next year and is targeting a doubling of this year's level by 2027. LAR is lining up a second pull from the financing package to support additional spending.
The Angolan segment of the Lobito Corridor has received backing from the US International Development Finance Corp. Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, US interest in Congo's resources has increased, in line with his push to reduce reliance on Beijing across a wide range of mineral products.

What It Means For Your Money
If this corridor keeps scaling, it could make one of the world's key copper and cobalt routes more reliable. More wagons, fewer slow zones, and steadier throughput translate into lower logistics friction for metals that power grids and EVs rely on. If you watch electrification timelines or metal prices, tracking how smoothly Lobito runs is a practical signal worth watching.
