Tech rally sets the tone for Asia
Derivatives tied to Hong Kong, South Korea, and Australia signaled gains, while Japan remained closed for a holiday. US equity futures barely budged following the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100's best performances since early August, with the Nasdaq 100 up 2.8%.
Early momentum for Meta Platforms Inc.'s AI agent rekindled animal spirits across tech. A sector benchmark gained over 4%, Meta advanced 11%, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reached a market capitalization of $1 trillion. That backdrop puts Asian memory giants Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. in the spotlight as investors wager that AI demand could keep boosting the chips needed to power those agents.
Oil slide links to Saudi shipments and diplomacy
Crude weakness added to the risk-on tone. US crude declined for the fifth consecutive session, while Brent finished Monday down 3.4% near $100 a barrel. Indications that Saudi shipments moving via the Strait of Hormuz increased came alongside renewed diplomatic optimism regarding the Iran war.
Cheaper crude took some heat off inflation concerns, helping pull the 10-year Treasury yield down to 4.95%, even as the dollar edged higher. Satellite data also showed a jump in Saudi Arabia's observed oil loadings inside the Persian Gulf, with the highest number of ships at the kingdom's main Persian Gulf port since June. Traders are weighing whether more supply and diplomatic efforts can keep pressing oil lower.
Diplomatic calendar and market positioning
Traders are focused on this week's meeting between President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping, with officials sounding upbeat before talks expected to cover topics such as AI along with trade and investment. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, his weekend meetings with China's chief trade negotiator, Li Chenggang, were "very successful."
"Traders are looking for news on any agreements that may reduce tariffs or improve access to critical minerals," said Jay Woods at Freedom Capital Markets. "Any positive developments on that front could lift equities particularly those in technology, industrial and consumer stocks."

According to the Wall Street Journal, the administration has put forward a plan to commit $5 billion to a new fund aimed at helping Middle East countries restore energy infrastructure harmed by the Iran war.
"With economic growth resilient and earnings still robust, we believe investors should remain positioned for market upside," said Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi at UBS Chief Investment Office. "Exposure to transformational innovation could be a key differentiator in long-term equity performance."
Beyond stocks: crypto, copper and the Fed
The risk-on tone spilled over into cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin climbed above $87,000 on Monday with smaller tokens also rising, and copper added to its advance amid indications of tighter supply conditions in China.
Offering a note of caution in London, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Austan Goolsbee said the central bank must not overlook repeated and persistent supply shocks, even if reacting causes economic pain. "Supply shocks have come more frequently, hit harder and lasted longer," he said. "And once supply shocks to inflation become persistent, some of the logic behind 'looking through' no longer holds."
Bottom line for your wallet: cheaper oil can cool inflation pressure, while AI enthusiasm keeps chip names in the conversation. The swing factor now is whether diplomacy and trade talks stick, which will tell you if this risk-on vibe keeps rolling or was just a short burst.
