What moved the stock
Maersk sank up to 11.6% in Copenhagen, the sharpest intraday drop since April 2025, before trimming the loss to 6.6% by 10:52 a.m. It was the sixth straight day lower, even with shares still more than 40% higher for the year.
The selloff followed a guidance lift that failed to top analyst models and quarterly results that missed. It was the second upgrade in three months and supersedes the former $4.5 billion to $6.5 billion range, with worldwide buildouts of AI infrastructure driving higher shipping demand and pricing.
The guidance and Q3 scorecard
For 2026, Maersk now guides to underlying EBIT of $8 billion to $8.5 billion, below the $8.66 billion average estimate compiled by Bloomberg.
In the third quarter, EBIT rose 155% year over year to $3.27 billion but missed the $3.61 billion forecast. Revenue and Ebitda also came in below expectations.
What management and analysts said
Chief Executive Officer Vincent Clerc pushed back on concerns about underperformance, saying "some analysts need to look into the spreadsheets," and added with a smile that "it might not be right to criticize" analysts "when we also have had a hard time forecasting."
AL Sydbank's Mikkel Emil Jensen said the shortfall was centered in the Ocean business, where volumes were a bit softer and costs ran higher than anticipated. According to him, volume was held back by a slowdown in the Middle East along with tough weather conditions, and the outlook suggests Q4 earnings will come in a bit below Q3, which he said matches his view.

Jyske Bank's Haider Anjum called the earnings strong but "not strong enough." He added that performance is currently aided by bottlenecks near the Strait of Hormuz, storm-related interruptions and port snarls, and he wondered how durable those factors will be.
The backdrop and why it matters for your portfolio
Those disruptions, plus AI-related demand, are propping up near-term pricing, but the key debate is duration.
The bottom line: Maersk hiked its medium-term target again but kept it under consensus and paired it with a Q3 miss. If you hold shipping or logistics names, watch how AI-driven demand evolves and whether congestion and geopolitical tailwinds start to fade.
