Gordon Brothers says it is seeking a way to save Poundland jobs

Published Nov 5, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Gordon Brothers, the US owner of Poundland Group Ltd., says it is pursuing all avenues through a sale process to protect as many jobs as possible and preserve value.
  • The 600-store chain entered insolvency proceedings, placing about 12,000 roles in jeopardy; Gordon Brothers acquired it for £1 a little over a year ago.
  • Prime Minister Andy Burnham is pressing for an outcome that steers clear of bankruptcy following solvent offers, and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds plans to meet the firm this week.

What happened

Poundland has entered insolvency proceedings, putting about 12,000 jobs at risk. Gordon Brothers, which bought the discount retailer for £1 a little more than a year ago, faces questions about how it has managed the troubled chain.

What the owner says

Gordon Brothers says it is exploring every possible path in the sale process to secure a resolution that safeguards as many jobs as possible and maintains value. A spokesperson said Thursday, "We are pursuing all avenues through the sale process to find a solution which protects as many jobs as possible and preserves value." The firm said the 600-store chain was "in distress and required a radical restructure, urgent operational change and significant funding," and added, "In spite of our efforts and the tremendous efforts of management to deliver a turnaround, the business remains challenged and vulnerable to any potential downturn in future trading."

What comes next and why it matters

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been at the forefront, pushing the investment firm to deliver an outcome that keeps it out of bankruptcy after solvent offers were proposed. This week, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is scheduled for talks with Gordon Brothers executives. In parallel, Liam Byrne, chair of the House of Commons' Business and Trade Select Committee, has requested that its chief appear to provide evidence next week.
