UBS trims about 200 London roles as Credit Suisse integration nears finish

Published Nov 4, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • People familiar with the moves say UBS Group AG has eliminated about two hundred London roles over the past few weeks.
  • The cuts hit wealth management and investment banking; separately, following changes to compensation structures, junior investment bankers throughout EMEA saw a reduced raise upon promotion.
  • The Credit Suisse integration seems on track toward year end, even as UBS pushes back against Swiss plans to raise capital at its foreign units.

What happened

UBS cut roughly two hundred positions in its London office in recent weeks, with the changes disclosed internally, people familiar with the matter said. The reductions touched several parts of the bank, including wealth management and investment banking, and some staff were offered new roles to soften the blow. A UBS spokesperson declined to comment.

Where this fits in the bigger project

More than three years have passed since UBS carried out its historic bailout for Credit Suisse, after which its workforce swelled to just under 120,000 and has subsequently fallen by roughly 18% from the takeover date. In 2023, Bloomberg reported UBS ultimately intends to shrink the combined headcount by about 30%, though the bank has not laid out a formal plan.

Signs of integration progress

The integration involves migrating large amounts of data and removing overlapping roles, and it seems on track. Chief Executive Officer Sergio Ermotti has led the process and indicated in recent months it should be wrapped up by year end. The latest cuts also arrive as junior investment bankers across EMEA received a smaller pay bump when moving up to the initial associate level this year, following updates to the Swiss lender's compensation structures.

The regulatory wrinkle

UBS is clashing with Swiss authorities over new capital requirements for its foreign operations. The government and regulators want the bank to hold more capital in overseas units, a shift that would reduce return on equity, and UBS is heavily opposing the package as it moves through Switzerland's legislative process.

Market shifts like reorganization remind investors that adaptability and insight always pay off. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

Why it matters for your portfolio

This round marks a key moment for UBS, which maintains a substantial London footprint at 5 Broadgate. Cost discipline, integration nearing the finish line, and a live debate over capital rules all feed into earnings power and return on equity - the levers that set the tone for bank valuations.

Exploring new tools can give investors a clearer perspective on changing conditions. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
