Freeport greenlights $4.5B boost at Arizona's Bagdad copper mine

Published Nov 4, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Freeport-McMoRan signed off on a $4.5 billion Bagdad expansion that, according to the company, is set to push mining and processing rates to more than twice today's levels while adding over 100,000 metric tons to yearly copper production.
  • The company plans to begin output in mid-2030 following an expected three-and-a-half-year buildout; if realized, the expansion would rank Bagdad as the second-largest US copper mine behind Morenci.
  • The plan adds a new concentrator and supporting infrastructure, taps existing resources, workforce and facilities, and Freeport says Bagdad's reserves stretch beyond 80 years before factoring in additional mineral resources.

What Freeport announced

Freeport-McMoRan on Wednesday signed off on a $4.5 billion expansion at its Bagdad copper mine in Arizona. The company expects the project to more than double current mining and processing throughput and increase annual copper production by more than 100,000 metric tons. The scope includes a new concentrator plus related infrastructure, making use of Bagdad's established resource base, workforce and facilities.

Timeline and scale

Freeport is targeting first output in mid-2030, assuming roughly three and a half years of construction. If completed as planned, the expansion would position Bagdad as the second-largest US copper mine, trailing only Freeport's Morenci operation. The company also says Bagdad holds reserve life of over 80 years, even before considering additional mineral resources.

Why it matters for copper

Miners are steering billions into existing sites because growing supply fast enough has been difficult as big new deposits get harder to find and develop. That tilt toward brownfield expansions - squeezing more from operating mines - comes as copper has traded near record levels this year, helped by tight supply and disruptions at major mines alongside demand tied to electrification, power grids and data centers. Copper's role spans electrical wiring, vehicles, construction and electronics. Freeport is running a similar playbook in Chile, outlining multi-billion-dollar plans at El Abra to extend the mine's life and markedly lift output.

The bottom line for your portfolio

This is another swing toward expanding what already works rather than opening brand-new pits, a setup that can keep supply tight near term even as longer term volumes are slated to rise. Watch how the construction timeline, industry hiccups at other mines and broader electrification demand shape copper prices as these expansions come online.
