Next braces for softer UK holiday sales as bills pinch shoppers

Published Nov 5, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Next Plc expects a muted UK festive season, with rising household bills and mortgage payments dragging on demand.
  • Over the 13‑week period ending Oct. 31, full‑priced UK sales were up 2% compared with 3.6% in the first half, and sales in UK stores declined 1.7%.
  • Overall full‑price sales climbed 8.1% on a 32% jump in overseas online, and Next kept its full‑year profit guidance unchanged.

The short version

Next signaled a cooler finish to the year in its home market, saying the recent slowdown is likely to carry into the final quarter. Even so, it held its full-year profit outlook after a run of upgrades in earlier trading statements.

The stock barely moved at the open in London, and is up 14% for the year through Wednesday's close.

What is selling - and where

Across the 13 weeks ending Oct. 31, full-priced UK sales rose 2%, trailing the 3.6% pace from the first half. Within that mix, sales at UK stores slipped 1.7% in the latest period.

Company-wide, full-price sales increased 8.1%, ahead of analyst expectations. The driver was a 32% rise in the overseas online business, supported by spend on marketing and upgrades to its direct-to-consumer site. Next has also partnered with platforms including the Zalando SE Fulfillment network to bolster operations abroad.

Next runs about 500 stores in the UK and holds the domestic distribution rights for Victoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works and Gap products.

Market shifts can feel unsettling, but smarter tools help investors find clarity. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

The backdrop and the read-through

In September, Chief Executive Officer Simon Wolfson cautioned that higher energy bills and mortgage costs would squeeze UK consumers before Christmas, and the company positioned itself for a quieter autumn and winter following a summertime jump in online clothing sales. The wider UK economy has beaten most G7 peers this year, yet signs of a pull-back are emerging as the war in the Middle East drives energy bills higher.

RBC's Richard Chamberlain said the retailer will remain "sensitive to the UK employment outlook and cost of borrowing for the consumer." Jefferies analysts including Frederick Wild called the update "a more muted UK growth than expected by investors, albeit one in-line with the previous guide," adding that strong sales show "a business amply able to offset near-term UK pressures."

Separately, Asos Plc cited consumer uncertainty but left its guidance on profits for the next fiscal year unchanged. The company said a cyberattack last month caused some disruption to trading.

Why it matters for your portfolio

Two forces are at work: a softer UK shopper and a faster-growing international online channel. Next expects the slower UK cadence to linger into the fourth quarter, but momentum in overseas e-commerce and an unchanged profit view suggest it still has levers to pull. For retail exposure, the balance between domestic store traffic and international online sales is doing much of the heavy lifting.

Watching trends closely matters, and learning new methods can sharpen your investing edge. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
