The contest and the result
Alpha Arena Season 1.5 puts AI models head to head by trading real stocks with the same initial bankroll. Musk-led xAI's Grok 4.20 came out on top, beating submissions from OpenAI and Google, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL).
An X Freeze post revealed the previously unnamed leaderboard entry as Grok 4.20 and reported it closed with about $11,060 in equity after starting at $10,000, which works out to roughly a 10% to 12% return. A screenshot shared with the post showed Grok variants sitting in four of the first six places.
How Grok was set up
The showing was achieved across several configurations of the same model - Situational Awareness, New Baseline, Max Leverage and Monk Mode - indicating the gains did not rely on a single approach. X Freeze added, "Grok 4.20 isn't just doing well on benchmarks," and, "It's making real money in live markets."
Why it caught attention
Elon Musk amplified the post and commented, "Ok, I think I see a way to pay for all those GPUs." The line taps into a key question for investors spending on AI infrastructure: can advanced models generate direct revenue streams, not just benchmark bragging rights?

The bottom line for investors
In plain English: one model made money trading live while rivals reportedly did not, and it did so across multiple setups. That is a small sample, but it hints at commercial paths for AI that go beyond demos - clearer if more contests with matched capital and transparent leaderboards keep showing similar outcomes.
