What changed
The IRS rolled out inflation updates for 2027, pushing up the income levels tied to each tax rate. Those revised thresholds apply to your 2027 return that you file in 2028.
There are seven brackets for 2027, with rates from 10% up to 37%. The top 37% rate kicks in above $661,375 of taxable income for individuals and $793,650 for married couples filing jointly.
Standard deduction and other key tweaks
For 2027, the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly will be $33,200, compared with $32,200 in 2026. Single filers can claim $16,600, an increase from $16,100.
How the system works
Federal income taxes are progressive, meaning higher slices of income get taxed at higher rates. Those rates apply to layers of taxable income, not to every dollar you earn.
Your bracket is determined by filing status, such as married filing jointly, head of household, qualifying surviving spouse, single, or married filing separately. For reference, line 15 on Form 1040 shows taxable income for 2025.

Each year, the IRS recalibrates the income bands for every tax rate using the consumer price index, the government's primary inflation yardstick.
Why it matters for your portfolio
The new brackets arrive while affordability remains a pressure point. In October, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the consumer price index rose 3.7% in September 2026 from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August.
In plain English: higher thresholds can reduce bracket creep, while bigger standard deductions and updated capital gains bands can change after tax returns, cash flow, and timing choices around stock sales or gifting. The bottom line: 2027 gives you a bit more room before higher rates apply, but the impact still comes down to your filing status and taxable income.
