West Africa's Regional Exchange Expands Products as Trading Surges

Published Nov 6, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • BRVM, the Abidjan exchange for the eight-country WAEMU bloc with a euro-pegged currency, plans to roll out futures and exchange-traded funds.
  • Its benchmark index is up 44% in dollar terms this year, ranking behind only Bulgaria and Nigeria, while traded volume and value have climbed 60% and 85% respectively.
  • The market lists 48 companies alongside government and corporate bonds, operates with a centralized depository and settlement bank, and counts nearly one quarter of its investors from outside West Africa.

What happened

BRVM, now in its 28th year and headquartered in Abidjan, is looking to deepen its market by adding more instruments. In an interview in Luanda, Angola, CEO Edoh Kossi Amenounve said the exchange aims to add futures and exchange-traded funds as new offerings to broaden its investor base and lift trading.

Momentum is strong. The main index has advanced 44% in dollar terms this year, placing it third globally after Bulgaria and Nigeria based on Bloomberg data. Amenounve said traded volume has expanded 60% and value traded is up 85% this year, calling it "a very good year." The platform carries 48 listings and offers both government and corporate debt, with post-trade handled through a centralized depository and settlement bank.

Who is driving the move and which stocks stand out

Amenounve pointed to younger savers as a priority audience for the new products. Across the WAEMU, the median age sits under 20, and the exchange has pushed for stock splits and now allows purchases of a single share to lower the entry ticket. "Young people are coming," he said. "They want to reap from the dividend and growing value on the market."

Individual names have run hot. Coris Bank International SA is the top performer this year, nearly tripling in dollar terms, while Ecobank Transnational Inc., a pan African lender, has gained more than twofold. Returns have helped BRVM grow into Africa's sixth largest exchange by market value. Investor reach is widening too, with almost one in four participants coming from beyond West Africa, including firms and asset managers with bases in London, Paris, New York, Dubai and Johannesburg.

New tools and smarter analysis can help investors find an extra edge. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

The regional economy behind the rally

BRVM serves Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, and the bloc's above trend growth has underpinned market gains. Together, these economies tally GDP of $254 billion and a population north of 150 million, with meaningful energy and farm resources.

Agriculture is central to the story, contributing roughly a quarter of output and driving jobs and export receipts. Ivory Coast is the top global producer of cocoa, and cotton is a key crop in Burkina Faso, Mali and Benin. BRVM is preparing a regional commodities marketplace to harness that base. Ivory Coast already runs an agricultural commodities exchange, and as Amenounve put it, "we are thinking regionally that we should have a commodity market."

What investors should watch next

Private equity funds are looking to list for exits, and family owned companies are warming to equity financing as Aliko Dangote advances the IPO of his mega refinery, which has drawn applications from millions across Africa. Amenounve expects more listings as governments push ahead with privatizations. "We have recorded 12 IPOs during the last 10 years," he said. "That will continue in the next years on the BRVM, where we expect to have one to two IPOs every year," he said.

In plain English: the exchange's plan to launch new products, easier access to shares, and a young investor base could widen participation. Add in faster growth, rising foreign interest and a steady pipeline, and you have a market that is changing quickly. How it fits in your portfolio comes down to tracking those facts over time.

Staying curious about evolving technology is part of disciplined investing practice. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
