RBC hires Mizuho's Mariano Gaut to lead global strategic equity solutions

Published Nov 5, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Royal Bank of Canada hired Mariano Gaut from Mizuho Financial Group Inc. to lead global corporate derivatives structuring and the origination of convertible bond deals.
  • He will begin in January in New York as the global lead for strategic equity solutions on RBC's equity capital markets team, according to an internal memo.
  • Bloomberg data shows RBC ranks eighth in US equity-linked deals and 13th globally this year, including roles on Alphabet's $19.3 billion mandatory convertible preferred and $2 billion-plus convertibles for Cloudflare, NextEra Energy, and Duke Energy Corp.

What RBC announced

RBC named Mariano Gaut its incoming global head of strategic equity solutions inside the equity capital markets group. Bloomberg News reviewed an internal memo, and a spokesperson for the Canadian bank confirmed what it said.

Gaut's role and start

Gaut begins in January and will be based in New York. His mandate includes structuring corporate derivatives and originating convertible bond transactions worldwide, while working closely with RBC's global equities business. The memo bore the signatures of Jim Wolfe, who runs Global Investment Banking Capital Markets, and Nitin Babbar, global head of ECM.

Track record and recent deals

Gaut is a banking veteran with more than 25 years in the industry. During the last ten years, he oversaw Mizuho's capital markets origination spanning corporate equity derivatives and deals involving equity-linked financing. Before that, he spent about 15 years at Citigroup Inc., covering the US, Europe and South America, and also worked in Tokyo, where he put together equity-linked deals and other structured transactions for corporate issuers, private equity firms, financial institutions, and government clients.

This year, Bloomberg's rankings show RBC at eighth in the US equity-linked league table and 13th worldwide. The bank worked on Alphabet Inc.'s $19.3 billion sale of mandatory convertible preferred stock and on convertible bond offerings exceeding $2 billion for Cloudflare Inc., NextEra Energy Inc., and Duke Energy Corp., according to Bloomberg's data.
