New leadership and who they are
Erdogan moved Muhsin Atci, previously running the nation's tax inspection body, into the top job at the Capital Markets Board. He tapped Ersin Basar Ekmekci - a longtime financial-crimes investigator - to serve as deputy, and brought economist Yasemin Girici onto the board. The changes were published in the official gazette early Sunday.
What sparked the shake-up
The fallout started when some investment funds defaulted on redemption requests, setting off an investor exodus and a drop in equities. That, in turn, raised questions about whether the SPK acted decisively, with Turkey's justice minister characterizing it as a "Ponzi-like scheme."
Oversight questions and probes
On Oct. 20, Erdogan dismissed former SPK chief Mahmut Sutcu, ending a tenure that lasted about five months. Prosecutors are examining whether Sutcu's predecessor, Ibrahim Omer Gonul, fell short in supervising funds whose astronomical returns had raised flags months before the market stress. Ergun was taken into custody after authorities arrested Taha Cakmak, who previously served as CEO of the government-owned insurer Turkiye Sigorta.

Why it matters for your portfolio
New leadership at SPK is aimed at stabilizing oversight and shoring up confidence, which is the oxygen public markets trade on. The bottom line: regulators signaling tougher supervision can help reduce headline risk, but ongoing investigations mean the path back to normal liquidity and sentiment will likely hinge on follow-through.
