What Moscow reported
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that 1,214 drones were intercepted overnight across 19 regions, marking the highest tally it has announced so far. The ministry said interceptions spanned the Moscow region and reached the republics of Bashkortostan and Udmurtia, which lie far beyond 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine's frontier.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, air defenses downed 231 unmanned aircraft while they were closing in on the capital. In Bashkortostan, debris from downed drones hit a facility in the city of Sterlitamak, causing limited damage while the plant kept running, the city's mayor said via Interfax. The previous record, according to Russia, was 1,110 drones reported on Sept. 20.
The wider conflict and timing
The war, now deep into its fifth year, has intensified as US-led efforts try to restart talks that have been on hold since the Middle East conflict began in February. Russia is striking Ukrainian cities and energy sites with missiles and drones, while Ukraine is hitting logistics hubs and oil refineries.
Ukraine's Air Force said that, overnight, Russia sent out 112 drones - 40 of them jet powered - and that its defenses brought down 97. The drone surge came as President Vladimir Putin met heads of state from more than 20 nations in Moscow for the third Russia Africa forum, which continued Thursday. Peskov called it "strange to organize such a massive drone attack" during a global gathering, and said air defenses worked well, Interfax reported.

The diplomatic track
Washington is pressing to revive negotiations. As part of that push, Last week in St. Petersburg, Putin held a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff. That discussion produced an agreement to arrange three way talks among Ukraine, Russia and the United States, to be held next month in the United Arab Emirates, with the date still to be determined.
Why this matters for your portfolio
A record drone tally alongside a high profile summit underscores how the conflict's military and diplomatic tracks are moving in parallel. The bottom line: continued strikes on energy infrastructure and refineries, plus potential talks in the UAE, can sway energy prices, defense names, and risk sentiment across European assets.
