What Volkswagen announced
Volkswagen on Wednesday unveiled Vega, a made-in-China software stack built inside the company and customized for Chinese customer preferences. Out of the gate, the system includes assistance functions like automated parking.
Vega will get updates every three months. A major overhaul is planned for 2027 that will add advanced driver-assistance capabilities, and Volkswagen said it will update the stack next year for Level 3 automated driving, where a car can drive itself but the driver must stay alert and ready to take over.
Partnerships and wider software moves
Volkswagen said it is collaborating with Horizon Robotics on software for China and with Rivian Automotive Inc. in the US. The company added that Vega itself was developed in-house.
Big ambitions have stumbled before. Setbacks within Cariad, the company's internal software arm, delayed important launches - among them Audi's Q6 e-tron and Porsche AG's electric Macan - triggering a broad restructuring and a bigger emphasis on outside partners.
Exports and China's EV role
Europe's biggest automaker is leaning on more local development in China. The software and vehicle platforms it is building in that market are also meant to lift products sold elsewhere, highlighting China's growing status as a global EV development hub.
Volkswagen has started shipping VWs and Jettas made in China to regions it refers to as the Global South, covering the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia. The company says it will add Mexico, Egypt and Vietnam to the export list by the end of this year.

The China market picture
Whether Vega can change the trajectory is unclear. Volkswagen's sales in China fell 39% in the third quarter even though it introduced fresh Audi and VW offerings built jointly with SAIC Motor Corp. and Xpeng Inc. Local brands led by BYD Co. continue to dominate with affordable, software-heavy electric vehicles.
Separately, Mercedes-Benz Group AG said Wednesday it plans a wider reset of its China strategy following a sharper-than-expected downturn in the luxury-car market, and it is reviewing its product lineup, sales, production, sourcing and technology in the country.
What this means for your portfolio
This is Volkswagen betting that faster, locally built software can help it compete in China's fast-moving EV race, while also feeding tech into global models. Watch three signals: the cadence of Vega updates, traction from the SAIC and Xpeng collaborations, and whether exports to the Global South and new markets materialize on the timeline the company laid out.
