What he told CNBC
On CNBC's Squawk Box, Ajay Banga downplayed the idea that AI-driven rate fears are choking off financing, saying, "It's not really an issue." He added, "In general, I still believe that AI is going to be transformative and profitable," while cautioning that "everybody sees bumps in the road from here to there, and no one knows when the next bump will come."
Where demand is splitting
Banga said some investors are uneasy about circular financing and business models tied to AI. He contrasted that with emerging markets, which he said are not seeing the same hesitation because capital there is directed to infrastructure like bridges and roads, and to smaller-scale AI uses. By contrast, in developed markets the preference is to bankroll big AI applications - an approach he called the "exact opposite" need.
How the World Bank navigates risks
According to Banga, last year the World Bank pulled together $112 billion, roughly three times what it had three years earlier. He also said the private capital the institution oversees does not go to governments, which helps it sidestep concerns about looming debt crises and pressure from higher bond yields in some countries. His comments land just ahead of a run of central bank rate decisions, as economists and policymakers try to understand how widespread AI adoption will shape demand for capital and jobs.

Why it matters for your portfolio
Established in 1944, the World Bank says it works to end poverty and promote economic prosperity through global partnerships and financing, and its stance here signals that financing pipelines can stay open even as investors debate AI's effect on rates. Banga's background includes serving as CEO of Mastercard and vice chair at General Atlantic. The bottom line: if capital keeps moving and emerging markets stick to bricks, roads, and bite-size AI, project funding may remain accessible even while rate expectations wobble.
