The numbers and who's behind them
Government figures released Monday from Spain's foreign investment registry, DataInvex, show a sharp rise in US investments. Over the first six months of 2026, American investment in Spain increased 84% from a year earlier. Overall foreign investment rose 31.2% to €12.4 billion (€14.2 billion). The US remains Spain's largest investor, accounting for 23% of total FDI.
How big that increase is
When the top source of foreign capital ramps up, it moves the needle fast. With the US providing nearly a quarter of Spain's foreign direct investment, an 84% jump from American investors goes a long way in lifting the headline totals.
The political backdrop
Ties between Washington and Madrid have been bumpy since early 2025, mainly after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declined to meet NATO's defense spending goal of 5% of GDP. This year, tensions rose when Spain prohibited the US from using Spanish military bases to conduct military strikes on Iran. President Donald Trump has issued criticism of Spain and went so far as to threaten trade penalties.

What this means for your portfolio
Despite the friction, capital still found its way to Spain, a reminder that money often follows opportunity more than headlines. If you have exposure to Spain or Europe more broadly, the key signal to watch is whether this pace of US investment keeps building or starts to fade as politics evolve.
