What happened
Earlier this week, a Russian frigate released warning flares that nearly hit a Danish Air Force helicopter flying in international waters south of Denmark. On Wednesday, Russia's defense minister, Andrey Belousov, awarded the ship's commander a medal, with the ministry saying on Telegram that the decoration was for thwarting what it described as a provocation involving the helicopter.
Denmark's response
Copenhagen is accelerating a 1.8 billion kroner donation - about $275 million - with most of the funds directed toward bolstering Ukraine's air defense systems. Rasmussen unveiled the plan in Copenhagen on Friday, following approval from parliament's Foreign Policy Committee. He linked the incident to the aid timeline, signaling that Denmark is moving faster, not pausing.
The broader pattern and past support
Rasmussen placed the flare incident in a wider context. "It's part of a wider European pattern where Russia escalates and continuously tests boundaries to try to rock our cooperation and our support for Ukraine," he said. He added that such efforts will not succeed.
Across Europe, authorities suspect Russian hybrid operations: reports cite maritime drones near Romania, a weaponized UAV at Germany's Leipzig airport, and an unmanned aircraft that crossed from Belarus into Lithuanian airspace this week. Denmark has also accused Moscow of planning sabotage and conducting hybrid attacks inside the country. In addition to the current package, Denmark has already supplied €10.3 billion ($11.8 billion) in military assistance to Ukraine - not including EU-channeled contributions - a sum that puts Denmark among the leading donors.
