Expansion And Hiring Plans
Point72's Japan leader, Shinji Ogawa, says the firm intends to grow both its local team and the money it puts to work in Japan over the coming years. Ogawa, who became Japan head in November after roles at firms including JPMorgan Chase & Co., frames the buildout around a market that is opening new lanes for active investors.
To support that expansion, the Tokyo office has brought on an internal trainer and a recruiter focused on its graduate training program, part of a broader push to develop talent from within.
Why The Market Looks Different
Ogawa sees momentum from corporate governance reforms. "More companies in Japan are likely to reevaluate their capital allocation and redirect funds toward growth investments," he said. "There are very attractive investment opportunities."
Japanese shares have strengthened as management teams aim to lift capital efficiency under pressure from authorities and activist investors. At the same time, monetary-policy unknowns in Japan and the US are shaking up bond and currency markets.

Competition For Talent Heats Up
The hiring race is in full swing. Ogawa calls the battle for talent "extremely fierce" as global funds deepen their presence in Japan. The UK firm Brevan Howard Asset Management aims to launch a Japan outpost this year; Marshall Wace is working toward a 2027 opening, and ExodusPoint Capital Management is bolstering headcount across three Asian locations, Tokyo among them.
Billionaire Steve Cohen's Point72 is hiring for roles spanning fundamental research as well as macro and quantitative strategies. Ogawa added that there are still many equity sectors the team does not yet cover.
What It Means For Your Portfolio
If more Japanese companies prioritize growth investment and keep raising capital efficiency, stock pickers could find richer pickings. Combine that with a larger Point72 footprint and choppier rates and FX, and you get a market where active choices may matter more for where returns show up in the funds and ETFs you already hold.
