$200M Bet on Bot Detection as Automated Traffic Surpasses Humans Online

$200M Bet on Bot Detection as Automated Traffic Surpasses Humans Online
Summary:
  • Spur Intelligence raised $200 million in a funding round led by venture capital firm Insight Partners.
  • A recent Cloudflare report revealed that bot traffic has overtaken human internet traffic for the first time.
  • The cybersecurity startup was founded in 2017 by two former Defense Department engineers, well before the generative AI boom.

The Deal and What Spur Does

Spur Intelligence just landed a $200 million funding round from venture capital firm Insight Partners. The company, based in Lake Mary, Florida, was founded in 2017 by two former Defense Department engineers. Spur's platform enables organizations to differentiate authentic users from deceptive automated scripts, uncovering fraudulent accounts and potential threats.

Today's automated scripts employ sophisticated hiding techniques like illicit VPN services, residential proxy infrastructures, and identity-obscuring tools. By mapping the infrastructure behind each connection, Spur can flag suspicious activity that traditional security tools miss. This includes identifying the use of residential proxy networks - where bot operators route traffic through real home IP addresses - making the bots appear as ordinary users. The company's database of known malicious infrastructure allows clients to block threats in real time.

Thomas Krane of Insight Partners said in a written statement, "As sophisticated criminal VPNs, residential proxy networks, and anonymization infrastructure proliferate, organizations are increasingly operating with a critical blind spot: they can see the activity, but not the infrastructure behind it." That blind spot is what Spur aims to fix.

The timing is no accident.

The $200 million infusion positions Spur to scale its infrastructure mapping technology as enterprises increasingly struggle to distinguish legitimate users from automated threats. With bots now constituting the majority of internet traffic, the market for anti-bot solutions is expanding rapidly. Spur's early focus on the problem before the generative AI surge gives it a competitive edge in identifying sophisticated proxy networks that mimic human behavior.

Bots Just Passed a Weird Milestone

Matthew Prince, Cloudflare's founder and CEO, posted on X last month: "Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet's history," pointing to his company's latest traffic report.

What changed? Prince pointed to what he called "agentic traffic" - basically, automated systems that act like independent agents. The growth has been faster than anyone expected.

For businesses, this is a real headache. Fake accounts, credential stuffing, ticket scalping, content scraping - it all runs on bots that look human. If a company cannot tell a bot from a customer, it cannot protect its data or its users.

The Rapid Rise of Automated Agents

The milestone of bots surpassing human traffic marks a fundamental shift in how the internet operates. Cloudflare, which routes about 20% of global web traffic, reported that agentic bots - autonomous programs that can browse, complete forms, and interact with websites - grew so quickly that Prince revised his timeline from late 2027 to early 2027, and then saw it happen even sooner. Spur's platform directly addresses the problem these bots create: because many now route through residential proxy networks using real home IP addresses, traditional IP‑based blocking fails.

Spur instead examines the underlying infrastructure, such as the types of VPNs or anonymization services employed, to unmask the bots. This approach, honed since 2017, gave the company years of head start in building a database of malicious infrastructure signals. The $200 million from Insight Partners will allow Spur to expand that database and scale its real‑time blocking capabilities to more enterprise customers worldwide.
