YouTube Premium Set to Absorb Peacock's Full Content Library in 2027

Summary:
  • Peacock's entire library will become part of YouTube Premium in the U.S. from early 2027.
  • The deal covers NBC Sports NFL and NBA rights, Universal films and Bravo originals.
  • Talks began roughly nine months ago with a call between Comcast's Brian Roberts and YouTube's Neal Mohan.

A Deal Nine Months in the Making

It started with a phone call. Roughly three quarters of a year ago, Comcast's co-CEO Brian Roberts initiated contact with his counterpart at YouTube, Neal Mohan. After the leadership groups convened at Google's headquarters, the two firms started exploring potential collaborations like the one that eventually emerged.

The outcome: Every piece of Peacock's library - spanning NBC Sports' rights to the NFL and NBA, Universal movies such as the Minions series, and original programming from Peacock and Bravo including Real Housewives and "Love Island USA" - will become part of YouTube Premium subscriptions in America beginning in early 2027. Users will not need to exit YouTube to view that material.

Matt Strauss, chairman of NBCUniversal's media group, said in an interview: "The first principle for us was, does this accelerate Peacock's long-term growth? And the answer to that is yes." He added, "Peacock will now be one of the largest domestic streamers. It's going to significantly expand our reach."

Why This Deal Moves the Needle

Legacy media firms such as NBCUniversal have long pursued strategies to increase their income and profits, even as technology companies like YouTube capture a growing portion of audience attention. These firms have also been transforming themselves as viewers abandon traditional pay-TV packages for streaming services. Comcast plans to separate NBCUniversal into a standalone company within the next twelve months.

YouTube brings a massive audience. It has over 125 million global YouTube Premium members. In contrast, as of June 30, Peacock's paid subscriber count stood at 48 million, and the service turned its first quarterly profit in its most recent period. By embedding Peacock inside YouTube, NBCUniversal gains access to a much larger pool of potential viewers.

The numbers on announcement day tell the story.

What You Get and What It Costs

Here is how it works. YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S. will get all of Peacock's content without leaving YouTube. This arrangement also brings NBC Sports on board as a production collaborator for certain live sporting events on YouTube, mirroring its role in last year's NFL game.

Additionally, the agreement renews NBCUniversal's multiyear distribution contract with YouTube TV and ensures that YouTube, YouTube TV, and YouTube Premium will be available on Comcast's Xfinity cable systems and Xumo devices. Moreover, the collaboration will strengthen their advertising ties and tools, enabling NBCUniversal to generate ad revenue from its Peacock content shown on YouTube.

What about pricing?

This deal reflects a broader industry shift where traditional media giants increasingly rely on tech platforms to reach cord‑cutting audiences. With Peacock now embedded inside YouTube, NBCUniversal can focus on content creation while leveraging YouTube's distribution muscle - a model that could become a template for other legacy players navigating the streaming wars.
