What traders reported
According to traders who requested anonymity, Saudi Aramco executives conveyed informally to a number of Asian refiners that they could soon load oil at Yanbu on the Red Sea. The messages were informal, not official notices, and did not include dates. Saudi Aramco declined to comment.
Why Yanbu has been quiet
Loadings at Yanbu have been largely halted since Sept. 10, when drones launched from Iraq struck the East-West pipeline and the line was shut. The conduit had been moving about 4 million barrels a day to the Red Sea port. Late last week, a person familiar said Saudi Arabia was seeking to bring back roughly half of that capacity within days, yet Aramco has not issued any new updates.
Workarounds and who is feeling it
Some Asian refiners have already missed their scheduled Yanbu loading slots, and traders say they have ships either waiting near the port or heading there. Since the attack, Saudi exports to Asia have increased from Ras Tanura in the Persian Gulf, with cargoes transferred between ships in the Gulf of Oman after passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
European customers have been hit harder by the slowdown at Yanbu. At least two European refiners were told last week they would receive no oil in October under long-term agreements due to the pipeline attacks, and that the stance applied to all buyers on the continent.
