What Happened
Novo Nordisk A/S is teaming up with Anthropic PBC to weave artificial intelligence deeper into its labs, with an eye on moving faster in the increasingly fierce obesity market. The first phase puts Anthropic's Claude Science in the hands of Novo's R&D team to tackle researcher-identified problems where both sides believe their combined strengths can matter most. The aim is to shorten the slog from early discovery to approved products and, over time, use AI to surface "completely new scientific opportunities."
"Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organization," CEO Mike Doustdar said Wednesday, adding that the company wants to "become the world's most AI-driven healthcare company."
Why Novo Is Doing This
To close an anticipated revenue shortfall, Novo is pursuing the next generation of medicines, with Ozempic and Wegovy expected to encounter generics throughout the US and Europe at the start of the next decade. In the short run, it is also trying to reclaim market share from Eli Lilly & Co. The companies did not share financial details.
This follows Novo's move, announced months ago, to integrate OpenAI's technology across the organization.

Guardrails And Market Reaction
Earlier this month, Anthropic reported that some users had engaged Claude in manners that might facilitate the creation of biological weapons, while emphasizing the cases were unclear and the activity could have been harmless. Novo said the collaboration is grounded in strong data controls and active human review to help ensure AI is used responsibly.
At 3:30 p.m. in Copenhagen, Novo's shares were little changed. So far this year, the shares are off 15%.
What It Means for Your Portfolio
If AI trims time from lab bench to pharmacy shelf, timelines for next-gen obesity drugs could shift. That affects how you think about competitive footing and the staying power of future cash flows, especially with generics on the horizon and Eli Lilly in the race.
