What's Taking Shape
People with knowledge of the negotiations say Malaysia Airlines's parent is nearing a deal for about ten 787-10s. Those insiders, who asked not to be named because the process is confidential, said Boeing won out by promising earlier handovers starting in 2031. They added that GE Aviation's engine package compared favorably to what Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc put on the table.
Why The Fleet Switch
According to the people, the planned 787s would take the place of seven leased A350s and leave room to expand. The airline has been pursuing replacements for the A350s due to high lease charges, and it weighed options from both Boeing and Airbus before moving toward this choice.
Politics And The Bigger Picture
There is also a political wrinkle. People familiar with the situation noted that US President Donald Trump has linked Boeing purchases to trade agreements he signed with various countries. Last year, Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a plan for Malaysia to acquire 30 Boeing jets, with options that could bring another 30 if exercised. Malaysia Aviation Group did not immediately provide a response to inquiries, and both Boeing and Airbus declined to comment.

Where The Airline Stands Now
Since 2016, Malaysia Airlines has leaned on Airbus for its long haul fleet, shifting to A330s and A350s after phasing out the Boeing 777. In recent years it placed orders for forty A330neos to refresh older aircraft, with 10 already delivered. The carrier's total fleet is around 90 aircraft, including fifty-seven 737 narrowbodies. For travelers and investors, the takeaway is simple: a long haul refresh can lower costs and improve reliability over time, and that can ripple into fares and route choices without you needing to follow every order book detail.
