What happened
A pricing mistake pushed single-game tickets into eye-watering territory, so the Knicks, owned by Madison Square Garden Sports Corp., temporarily stopped selling individual seats. The company said that when sales resume, prices will be set to average a 12% increase from last year. Anyone who bought during the spike will get back the difference.
"Our intention was never to overcharge our loyal fans, and we thank everyone for their support of the Knicks and their patience as we get this right," MSG Sports, the Knicks' owner, said in a statement. The New York Post was the first to report the error.

The opener and the backstory
The season tips off Oct. 20 at Madison Square Garden against LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers, with a championship ring ceremony and banner-raising on the docket. In June, New York snapped a 53-year title drought, winning the Finals in five games over the San Antonio Spurs. Demand then was through the roof too: tickets ran into the thousands and the series delivered the most-watched NBA Finals since 1998.
What it means for fans and prices
Sticker shock spread fast. On Wednesday, the lowest-priced tickets on Ticketmaster and major resale platforms like StubHub were above $1,000, and TicketData pegged the entry point at $1,251 on secondary markets. MSG Sports says buyers who got caught by the glitch will be reimbursed once corrected pricing goes live. For fans budgeting for a celebratory season, the headline is simple: prices will be higher than last year on average, but not at the accidental levels that grabbed attention this week.
