The Big Shift: From Treatment to Prevention
On July 29, the IEEE - the global professional organization for electrical and electronics engineering - released its Technology Megatrends 2030 Report, which FOX Business had exclusive access to. The report says AI will dramatically change healthcare by 2030.
The core idea is a shift in philosophy.
Dejan Milojicic, an IEEE Fellow and chair of the Future Directions Committee's Industry Advisory Board, commented to FOX Business that among the megatrends analyzed, "health technologies emerge as among the most transformative and humanity-beneficial, driven by a fundamental shift from reactive treatment to proactive protection."
The report identifies six technological areas that can advance healthcare: customized medical treatments; genetic engineering and gene therapy; early disease detection and biomarker analysis; molecular therapies; protein creation; and life science understanding. Of those, the IEEE gave top marks to customized treatments, gene therapy and genetic engineering, and early diagnostics and biomarker identification for their impact, expected success rate, maturity, and adoption level.
What the Report Says Is Coming Next
The IEEE report looks at a five-year window from 2026 to 2030 for the biggest impacts. It also stretches the view out to five to ten years for the full picture.

Over that longer timeframe, the report expects health tech improvements to reduce preventable chronic diseases, improve personalized clinical outcomes, and increase access to high-quality, nutrient-dense foods.
The aging population is a major reason this matters. Milojicic spelled it out directly: "As populations age, using physical AI technologies, such as virtual nursing and intelligent monitoring, will become vital to supporting the needs of an expanding revitalized economy."
He also said, "At the same time, we see food systems being reimagined as core healthcare infrastructure, using AI-enhanced tools like smart traceability to deliver personalized nutrition and curb chronic disease at scale."
The report identifies enablers for health tech advancements, such as biotechnology, digital health, and agricultural drones and personalized nutrition. Inhibitors are privacy and security concerns for data used in public health prevention via epidemiology and surveillance, along with resistance from existing cultural norms.
With the global population over 60 expected to double by 2050, AI-driven preventive health measures could significantly reduce the burden on healthcare systems while improving quality of life. The report emphasizes that these benefits depend on robust investment in data infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to ensure equitable access across diverse communities.
The catch: None of this works without some serious guardrails.
