Disney Shifts from GitHub Copilot to OpenAI's Codex for US Workers

Disney Shifts from GitHub Copilot to OpenAI's Codex for US Workers
Summary:
  • Disney will replace GitHub Copilot with OpenAI's Codex for US staff starting in August.
  • Eight Disney tech workers told Business Insider they seldom used GitHub Copilot.
  • Disney will keep Anthropic's Claude Enterprise and Cursor, but drop Amazon's Kiro and Q tools.

The Big AI Tool Swap at Disney

Disney is shuffling its AI coding toolbox. Starting in August, the entertainment giant will cease using Microsoft's GitHub Copilot along with several other AI coding tools in the United States, turning to OpenAI's Codex as its replacement.

This represents a significant change in strategy. Microsoft has been pushing Copilot hard as a must‑have for developers. But inside Disney, some tech workers were not impressed. One product manager described Copilot-generated code as "needlessly complex." A veteran developer noted that their Copilot access had "lapsed for lack of use." Another staffer added, "Once I got Cursor and Kiro, there was no need to use it."

Cursor and Kiro are separate AI coding tools that Disney already offers. Kiro is one of two Amazon tools Disney is dropping alongside Copilot. Cursor, along with Anthropic's Claude Enterprise, will stick around.

Why Copilot Lost Its Spot

Last month, Microsoft altered its billing structure for GitHub Copilot. The new pricing is based on AI token usage, which measures how much data the tool processes. That frustrated some users, especially when they compared Copilot's output to alternatives.

Meanwhile, certain AI "superusers" at Disney use agents that invoke these AI tools up to tens of thousands of times daily. A high-level software engineer stated, "probably around 80% Claude at the terminal when coding."

A high‑level Disney AI staffer said the company's top priority is increasing velocity - basically, getting code written faster. "The No. 1 thing is to increase velocity," this staffer said.

What Changes for Disney's Developers

Starting in August, US‑based Disney tech staff will have a new lineup. OpenAI's Codex becomes the main coding assistant. They will still have access to Claude Enterprise from Anthropic and Cursor. Amazon's Kiro and Q are out along with GitHub Copilot. (Anthropic's Claude will also be removed from the Amazon Web Services Bedrock platform.)

Internationally, none of this applies yet. A Disney tech leader informed employees that these adjustments are not applicable outside the United States.

This move underscores a broader trend of enterprises reassessing their AI tooling as pricing models shift and capabilities evolve. Disney's choice to retain multiple assistants reflects a desire for flexibility, allowing developers to pick the best tool for each task.

The Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape for AI coding assistants is intensifying. Microsoft's recent reorganization of its Copilot divisions aims to make its products more competitive with OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude. Disney's decision, driven by a focus on developer velocity, shows that even major partnerships can be disrupted when better alternatives emerge. As Disney continues to offer multiple tools like Cursor and Claude Enterprise, it highlights the importance of flexibility in enterprise AI adoption.

Microsoft is not standing still. That fight is far from over.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
