Australia Keeps Several Historic Military Sites After Backlash Over Sales Plan

Published Nov 8, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • The government will keep several historic military sites instead of selling them after criticism of a plan to divest underused defence properties.
  • The original proposal targeted more than 60 military locations and a defence estate review identified 67 sites, with 11 already transferred to the Department of Finance.
  • The planned disposals were estimated to generate A$3 billion ($2.1 billion), which the government says could help fund expanded defence capabilities.

What changed

The government reversed course and will retain several historic defence properties rather than sell them. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Victoria Barracks Sydney will be removed from the sale program and will stay in public ownership, "for all Sydneysiders to enjoy," said Anthony Albanese.

Which sites are protected

Albanese said four defence sites of the 67 will be retained in public hands. He named Victoria Barracks Melbourne, Fort Queenscliff (Victoria) and the RAAF facility at Point Cook (Melbourne fringe) along with the Sydney barracks. Defence says Victoria Barracks Sydney was established in 1840, originally accommodated the British Army and has "significant heritage," said the Defence department.

The bigger picture and what it means for your money

The original plan targeted more than 60 locations and the review identified 67 sites, with 11 already moved to the Department of Finance. The planned disposals were estimated to raise A$3 billion ($2.1 billion), and the government has said those sale proceeds could help fund expanded defence capabilities. Minister for Defence Richard Marles said, "We face the most complex, in some ways the most threatening strategic landscape that we have faced since the Second World War and as a result of that our government has significantly increased defense expenditure," said Richard Marles. The defence build up is linked in part to China's growing military strength, a connection the government has cited in discussing the funding plan.

Learning to use smarter tools can give everyday investors a practical advantage. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
