What happened
Anthropic has lined up a multi billion dollar order for gas generators to support data center buildouts, the FT reported. The purchase is described as the biggest known one shot acquisition of power generation gear by an AI outfit.
How the deal was structured
The company secured capacity amounting to 1.7 gigawatts from OnePWR Solutions of San Antonio in late September, but did not acquire the supplier itself. Anthropic initially expected to buy electricity from OnePWR, then opted instead to assume OnePWR's existing Caterpillar Inc. generator orders. Neither company provided a statement to the FT and they also did not give an immediate response to Bloomberg.

Why it matters for your portfolio
AI labs are moving closer to the power supply chain, cutting out middlemen to lock down scarce equipment. The move by Anthropic suggests it is pivoting to control a larger share of the infrastructure underpinning its AI work, following a period of reliance on partners for power, chips, data centers, and land. According to the company, spending will exceed $895 billion in the years to come, with the bulk allocated to computing power and infrastructure costs. The bottom line: securing energy hardware is becoming part of the AI capital stack, and it could shape who scales fastest.
