Targeted Boxer Buys Set for Q4
Germany is preparing to add specialized Boxer variants, and the Bundestag budget committee intends to activate options toward year-end for training-configured Boxers and robust armored ambulance models. An internal defense ministry lineup of upcoming projects points to those purchases, but it does not specify how many units are on deck.
A previously signed agreement with Rheinmetall AG and KNDS NV from November 2025 caps the optional buys at up to 100 trainer Boxers and 150 ambulances. The list carries a Sept. 7 date and is described as preliminary, so changes remain possible.
The document covers 72 programs overall, highlighting Leopard 2 A8 main battle tanks alongside Puma armored infantry fighting vehicles among them. It also notes that other Boxer setups, such as the Schakal wheeled armored personnel carrier, a variant set up to carry heavy weapons for infantry units, and the Skyranger air defense system, are not part of this particular batch.
A spokesperson for the defense ministry would not discuss the internal list. Rheinmetall likewise refused to discuss the document or the contract negotiations.
Larger Arminius Orders Still in Flux
Rheinmetall Chief Executive Officer Armin Papperger has said he is confident lawmakers will sign off this year on a much bigger wave of Boxer purchases worth more than €12 billion under the Arminius package. However, someone with knowledge of the defense ministry's procurement process said he does not expect a larger Boxer order tied to that bundle to clear approval before the end of this year.

In August, Papperger told Bloomberg he anticipated the final Arminius contract talks would be held during the second week of September. The list carries a Sept. 7 date. Rheinmetall declined to comment on either the list or those negotiations.
KNDS has resumed investor meetings as it weighs a potential initial public offering this year, with the Boxer deal playing a pivotal role in how the company is valued.
What It Means for Investors
Rheinmetall said last month it will put €270 million into facilities in Kassel, Germany, including expanding Boxer output to meet rising demand. Those factory plans sit alongside the near term Q4 options for training and ambulance models and the not-yet-decided Arminius decisions.
The timing here is the tell. Q4 approvals could shape production schedules and revenue pacing, while the 72-project slate - with marquee items like Leopard 2 A8 and Puma - shows how crowded Germany's procurement pipeline is. Keep an eye on what actually gets locked in this year versus what slips to next.
