Dimon Says Hyperscaler AI Spend Could Hit $1 Trillion Next Year

Published Sep 21, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon expects spending by and around the hyperscalers could climb to $1 trillion in the coming year.
  • He said outlays have jumped from roughly $300 billion a year ago to about $700 billion now, lifting growth while risking a bit more inflation.
  • Dimon called AI an "unbelievable technology," cautioned it's early to pick winners, and noted heavy capital needs beyond AI could keep rates elevated.

Dimon's numbers and tone

Speaking with CNBC-TV18 during the 11th annual JPMorgan India Conference, Jamie Dimon said hyperscaler investment could approach $1 trillion next year. He noted that spending has more than doubled over the past year, moving from roughly $300 billion to around $700 billion. In his view, that surge is powering the economy and, as he put it, "That's like 1% increase to GDP each year." He added the wave of hiring, new plants and power capacity, and purchases of equipment and materials "may add a little bit to inflation."

Dimon called AI an "unbelievable technology" whose rapid rollout "looks like it's going to continue." Still, he argued it's too soon to declare champions, pointing back to the internet era when many well known names faltered and previously little known firms later became major winners.

Inflation, growth and capital needs

Dimon said the current AI and hyperscaler buildout is supporting growth, while acknowledging near term price pressure could tick up. Over a longer stretch, he said AI might prove deflationary as companies learn to use it more effectively. Beyond tech, he flagged how infrastructure, remilitarization and persistent fiscal deficits are all soaking up capital, which could be contributing to an uptick in interest rates. He also remarked that there "may be a market correction," but he was uncertain that AI would be the reason.

How companies think about AI investments

On the return math, Dimon said not every AI project will be judged by a neat IRR or payback calculation, since "sometimes it's just table stakes." He pointed to better customer experience as a real benefit that is tough to measure, and said companies are likely to get more efficient in how they roll out AI over time.

Geopolitics, India and JPMorgan's plans

Dimon remained cautious on inflation, saying he hopes price pressures cool but "there's a chance it won't, and it may even go up a little bit," and that the Federal Reserve should hold to its 2% target. Looking ahead of a planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, he said the two sides seem to be making headway and should "fully engage" on trade, AI and security, calling the talks "important for the whole free world."

On India-U.S. relations, Dimon urged both countries to get back to the table and finish a trade agreement. "It obviously hasn't moved forward," he said. "I hope it's not put in the back burner." He added that while he understands U.S. concerns about purchases of Russian oil, Washington should consider India's refining needs and avoid "punishing India and the world oil markets." More broadly, he said India's economy could reach three times its present scale over the next decade, and signaled JPMorgan's commitment to the country: "We're going to keep on building."
