Comcast flags no relief in broadband losses this quarter; shares drop 6.6%

Published Sep 9, 2026

Summary:
  • Comcast fell 6.6% to $24.59 after CFO Jason Armstrong said broadband subscriber losses are not improving this quarter.
  • He pointed to rivals selling 1 gigabyte a second service for about $30 to $40 a month, which he called "not a rational price point."
  • Bloomberg Intelligence says losses may track last quarter's 167,000 decline, not the 103,000 analysts expected.

What happened

Hoping Comcast's internet slump was easing? Not yet. Chief Financial Officer Jason Armstrong told investors at a Goldman Sachs conference that broadband subscriber losses are not abating this quarter. Comcast finished down 6.6% at $24.59. Charter Communications, facing the same pricing heat, fell 8.1%.

The price war that is squeezing margins

Armstrong said competitors are advertising broadband at around $30 to $40 a month for service rated at 1 gigabyte a second. "That, to us, is not a rational price point," he said, noting those offers make investment returns hard to pencil out. The deal parade is long: Charter's Spectrum has a one-gigabit home offer at $60 a month for a year.

Optimum Communications Inc. promotes a one-gig fiber service for $25 a month. Verizon has Fios at $30 a month, while customers pay $80 to actually reach gigabit speeds. Comcast is marketing Xfinity gigabit at $50 per month.

It was very competitive in Q2.

What to expect in the numbers

Bloomberg Intelligence says the quarter's broadband results likely hew closer to last quarter's loss of 167,000 customers than to the 103,000 decline analysts had penciled in. Comcast, based in Philadelphia, also recently laid out a plan to carve its connectivity operations apart from its media assets, and it continues to contend with ongoing erosion in cable TV and home internet.

Theme parks and the money angle

On theme parks, Armstrong said the "softness in Orlando" the company described last quarter is continuing, pointing to equal measures of macro factors, gas prices, and airfare weighing on the market. For your wallet, here is the through line: cheaper gig-speed deals are pulling customers to rivals, pressuring cable profits and keeping internet subscriber trends choppy in the near term, even as Comcast points to only modest improvement in profitability and a better full-year broadband trend.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.

  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.
  • The tradeoff is real: you give up some upside, and the two key numbers to check are maximum drawdown and correlation to the market.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.

  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
