Bitcoin Pulls Back From Eight-Month Peak After Sharp Rally

Published Sep 21, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Bitcoin eased to about $85,500 early Tuesday in Singapore after hitting $87,381 during the US session, still roughly $10,000 above last week's lows and up more than 13% over four days.
  • Deribit options positioning skews bullish with nearly 320,000 call contracts vs. just over 169,000 puts, while more than $1 billion in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, including about $840 million in shorts.
  • Sentiment brightened after the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday cleared the way for US trading of blockchain‑based securities, alongside late‑week spot Bitcoin ETF inflows.

What happened to the price

After a four-day sprint, Bitcoin cooled off in Asia, with prices near $85,500 early in Singapore after touching $87,381 in the US. Even with the dip, it is back to late‑January levels and sits about $10,000 above last week's trough. It remains well below its October record of $126,000 and also under the 2026 mid‑January peak above $97,000.

Why sentiment flipped

Crypto shrugged off two potential drags last week: the failure of a landmark US bill that would have clarified industry rules and the Federal Reserve's first interest rate increase in more than three years. What did help: on Thursday the Securities and Exchange Commission authorized US trading in blockchain‑based versions of securities, lifting related tokens. Broader equities drew support from cheaper oil and optimism ahead of a planned meeting linking US President Donald Trump with China's Xi Jinping. Countering that boost, crude remains close to $100 a barrel while US Treasury yields, though easing, are still elevated.

What traders are watching

Forced flows mattered. Over the past day, more than $1 billion in long and short positions were liquidated across digital assets, with roughly $840 million of that coming from shorts, per Coinglass. On the options side, open interest on Deribit leans bullish, showing nearly 320,000 calls against just over 169,000 puts.

"It looks like mechanics before conviction. "$84,000 is the level that matters.

Bulls also pointed to solid spot US Bitcoin ETF inflows late last week, and to Michael Saylor's Strategy Inc. - the biggest corporate owner of Bitcoin - buying the coin after a three-week hiatus. Even so, retail interest has been hard to re‑ignite as artificial intelligence stocks and other AI‑themed trades compete for speculative capital.

What this means for your portfolio

Momentum is steering the tape, with a short squeeze and options skew providing fuel. Traders are eyeing $84,000 as a near‑term line in the sand, while prices still trail the October record and the 2026 mid‑January high. Translation a friend would use: the setup looks better, but if broader risk appetite stumbles, crypto can feel it fast.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.

How to Build Your First $2,000 Emergency Fund and Wipe Out Every Debt Over 10%

  • More than a third of American adults couldn't cover a $400 surprise bill with cash or savings, according to the Federal Reserve, and that's how one bad day turns into years of credit card payments.
  • Once the $2,000 is there, attack every debt charging more than 10% interest, highest rate first, because you can't out-invest a 22% credit card so paying it off is the investment.
