What happened in the trial
AstraZeneca tested camizestrant in people with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer who had not yet started therapy for that setting. The drug did not achieve the study's primary goal of improving progression-free survival versus the current standard approach. The company disclosed the outcome on Friday and said it plans to present the data at a future time.
How this stacks up with recent readouts and earlier signals
Roche's giredestrant stumbled in a comparable study earlier this year, which had already tempered hopes that AstraZeneca's pill would clear a higher bar. Camizestrant is a hormone therapy designed to block estrogen from binding to cancer cells and fueling growth. In an earlier study in patients with recurrent or metastatic disease, pairing camizestrant with other cancer drugs pushed back the point at which the disease worsened by more than six months. The medicine is sold as Etcamah and is cleared in the European Union for this form of breast cancer.
Study design and regulatory backdrop
In this latest trial, AstraZeneca combined camizestrant with the older cancer medicine palbociclib to test it in a broader patient population. Separately, the drug won US approval on Sept. 4, supported by results from another trial in a narrower group of patients.

The money angle
AstraZeneca sees the pill as a potential blockbuster, projecting more than $5 billion in yearly sales. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expect about $2 billion in 2031 revenue, and Bloomberg Intelligence's Tonia Kefala Stavridi and John Murphy estimate that success in this first-line setting could unlock nearly $2 billion more.
