What Stockland announced
Stockland Corp. said the upcoming stage of its logistics precinct will not include a data center. The project, developed with partner John Boyd Properties, was introduced last year. A company spokesperson added, "We will continue to engage openly with stakeholders as planning for the logistics precinct progresses."
The site and the pivot
The plan covers nearly two square kilometers on land that once hosted a golf course, located next to Sydney Airport along the Cooks River. Earlier this year, Stockland floated data centers as an alternative use, drawing criticism from local groups. Earlier, the company cited the location's proximity to Sydney Airport and Port Botany, arguing that the precinct could accommodate multiple uses, including retail and hospitality.
Why investors should watch this
Pushback against data centers is building across Australia due to concerns about heavy electricity and water demand. Last month, Nextdx Ltd. paused development after protests slowed the delivery of power to a major Melbourne project. Firmus Grid Ltd. also stepped back, shelving its planned stock market debut after investors balked at a $30 billion valuation.

In plain English: infrastructure appetite matters for your portfolio. If communities and investors keep pushing back, timelines stretch and capital gets repriced. Stockland, for its part, says it will keep talking with stakeholders as the logistics precinct advances.
