What happened
Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, said its finance chief Kaiser Ng is exiting, an announcement that arrived just days after thieves stole more than $6 billion in digital assets from the platform. The $6.3 billion theft is the largest in cryptocurrency's history, landing as the sector moves further into the mainstream while artificial intelligence raises the bar for cyber defense.
On Oct. 31, the FBI said North Korea was behind the Binance attack. The company later reported that approximately 90% of the $6.3 billion has already been reimbursed, and it remains on track with its commitment to repay customers in full.
Who is stepping in
Co-CEO Yi He said "Justin Yek will become the firm's new CFO." Yek was most recently vice president of finance at payments platform Airwallex. "I am thrilled to step into the role of CFO at Binance," he said. "I look forward to leading our finance organization as we continue to scale responsibly and deliver on our mission globally."
The wider backdrop
Yi He said Ng is departing "after more than five years at Binance," noting a transition plan has been in place for six months. Per his LinkedIn page, Ng came to Binance in January 2022 following roughly five years at Kraken. A message seeking comment on LinkedIn did not receive a swift response from him.
Other exchanges have faced major breaches too, including Bitget and Bybit, highlighting sector-wide security pressures as cyber risks evolve.
