Council launch and messages
The new China Austria business council convened its debut meeting in Beijing on Friday. At the session, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao pressed for equal treatment for Chinese companies in Austria, highlighting the need for a fair, open, and non-discriminatory playing field.
The Commerce Ministry published details on Saturday. Austrian Economy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer said his government seeks a steadier and more even economic relationship with China, plans to expand sales into the Chinese market, and welcomes capital from Chinese firms.

Trade picture
Statistics Austria data shows China ranked as Austria's number two source of goods imports in 2025, at €17.5 billion, or $19.5 billion, up 13% from 2024. Austrian exports to China declined 5.4% to €5 billion. The result was a €12.49 billion goods trade deficit with China, Austria's largest gap with any single trading partner.
What it means for your portfolio
In plain English: Austria buys far more from China than it sells there, and both ministers are signaling they want to change the shape of that flow. Watch for whether the council's follow through - and any shift in investment treatment - nudges Austria's export line up or opens new lanes for Chinese capital.
