Quick Mart IPO Oversubscribed as Share Sale Closes

Published Nov 6, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Orders for Quick Mart Plc's IPO ran nearly 23% above the shares available.
  • Investors sought 2.45 billion shares at 7.50 shillings apiece versus 2 billion on offer.
  • The company logged 18,492 applications and said, "The board is delighted with the strong response."

Demand was heavy, and the allocations show it

Quick Mart's Nairobi offering pulled in requests for 2.45 billion shares against 2 billion up for grabs, leaving demand almost a quarter higher than supply. Applications totaled 18,492, and the company noted, "The board is delighted with the strong response."

A little more than 18,000 retail buyers in Kenya and the wider East African region received full allocations amounting to 119.6 million shares. Separately, 44 foreign investors were awarded about 236 million shares, which the company said was just under half of what they asked for.

Who anchored the deal, and who is cashing out

Four cornerstone investors backed the transaction: Redwheel Group's RWC Asset Management LLP; 337 Frontier (an adviser founded in 2016 focused on frontier African stocks); the International Finance Corp.; and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through its Mobilist program.

Savvy investors know that small insights can add up to meaningful gains. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

This is a sell-down by existing holders, not new money for the company. Quick Mart is issuing no fresh shares and will not receive proceeds. Previously, Sokoni Retail Kenya Ltd. owned the entire company and is divesting half of that holding. The entity serves as the holding company for founder John Kinuthia and Adenia Partners, and Mauritius-based Adenia controls it.

Once the deal wraps, the four cornerstones will own 21.6% of the company. Institutions from Kenya and the East African region will hold 17.5%, regional retail investors will have 5%, and foreign investors will own 5.9%.

Market backdrop and what comes next

This is only Nairobi's second IPO of the year, following the offer from state-run Kenya Pipeline Co., and it is being read as a tentative reopening in Kenya's equity capital market. The tailwind helps: the country's main stock gauge is up 28% in dollar terms this year, ranking among the 10 best performers globally.

Trading in Quick Mart is set to begin on the Nairobi Securities Exchange on Nov. 12. The roles of lead transaction adviser, placing agent, and sponsoring broker were handled by Standard Bank Group Ltd.'s Stanbic Bank together with Stanbic Securities.

Exploring how artificial intelligence informs decisions can help you refine your approach. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
