What happened
U.S. agencies issued a Thursday statement cautioning that commercial cold storage faces a continuing cyber threat, following recent incidents affecting freezers in the United States and Europe. Reuters reported last week that Pentagon investigators are treating a string of mysterious August outages on grocery store refrigeration units at U.S. military bases as a cyberattack.
Over the past few months, attackers have launched no fewer than three campaigns against commercial refrigerators and freezers. A large attack in France last month inflicted damage worth tens of millions of euros, and a subsequent round on Monday impacted more than 100 stores across Europe.
Who is warning and what they said
The alert came from the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the health, transport and agriculture departments. It said unknown "malicious cyber actors" were targeting weaknesses in controllers that manage temperatures and commercial refrigeration, reachable over the public internet and deployed in grocery retail and dedicated cold-storage sites.
Chris Butera, the acting executive assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, said, "Every organization that depends on refrigeration and monitoring systems should assume it could be a target." Brett Leatherman, FBI Cyber Branch Operations Director, added that the government is "seeing these systems targeted across critical infrastructure sectors globally."

The government urged operators to take devices off the public internet, segment them from corporate IT networks, and promptly apply software updates.
Why it matters for investors
If attackers get in, they could remotely alter temperatures and trigger real-world consequences, including "fire hazards, loss of inventory and changes to the service life of the system," the statement warned. That is direct operational risk for grocers, food distributors, logistics firms and any business that relies on cold chains.
The bottom line: resilience and basic cyber hygiene for operational tech matter to margins. Look for disclosures on network segmentation, patch cadence, and exposure of control systems to the public internet.
