Banorte Will Give Away One Hyundai Creta a Day to Win New Deposits

Published Nov 5, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Banorte rolled out a September-to-December promo that draws one Hyundai Creta winner each day.
  • Every 10,000 pesos ($540) in fresh funds placed in an eligible account earns a raffle entry, whether by opening a new account or topping up an existing one.
  • Deposits rose 13% year over year in Q3, with regulator data through August showing Banorte and BBVA's deposit growth outpacing the broader system.

The pitch: daily SUVs for fresh cash

Banorte's latest customer hook is simple: feed an account with new money and you're in the running for a Hyundai Creta, with one SUV awarded per day from September through December. Each additional 10,000 pesos of new deposits unlocks another ticket, and both newly opened accounts and added balances qualify. By one estimate, the full slate of cars comes to roughly 40 million pesos.

At Miranda Partners, Gilberto Garcia - the head of strategic advisory - described the move as "a clever use of behavioral economics." In his words, "Giving away cars, even if through raffles, definitely catches people's attention for a relatively tiny marketing investment, making up for the fact that most legacy banks simply cannot compete for deposits on rates."

The competitive backdrop

Incumbent banks in Mexico are wrestling with digital challengers that have dangled double-digit yields. Even so, Jefferies analyst Inigo Vega wrote Tuesday that online players have kept picking up share despite dialing back those initial teaser rates.

"This path translates into concrete results," Banorte Chief Executive Officer Marcos Ramirez said on a media call Tuesday.

Promotions like these show how creativity can reveal fresh opportunities for investors. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

What the numbers say

Banorte reported a 13% year over year jump in deposits for the third quarter, per results posted Tuesday. Management said non-interest-bearing balances are advancing at a 12% clip, ahead of 11% growth in loans.

Regulator figures through August show Banorte's deposits growing faster than the overall market, with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria also outpacing the system. For scale, Banorte's deposit base stands around 1.32 trillion pesos ($71.1 billion). Against that, Garcia characterized the roughly 40 million pesos in prize cars as a rounding error.

Why it matters for investors

This is a textbook example of paying for attention instead of paying up on rates. If digital banks keep adding share while easing back on promotional yields, the incumbents' calculus holds: lean on scale and brand, not price. Banorte's mix - deposits up 13%, non-interest-bearing balances growing 12%, loans up 11% - shows the bank adding funding without chasing hot money, while spending modestly to juice inflows through year end.

Savvy investors seek small advantages wherever they arise to strengthen long term results. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
