Strong quarter and the numbers behind it
India's largest power producer said Saturday that second quarter profit reached 53.2 billion rupees, or about $560 million, versus 46.5 billion rupees in the same period last year and ahead of the 49.42 billion rupees average estimate from Bloomberg-tracked analysts.
Top line momentum matched the bottom line beat. Quarterly revenue rose 17% to 457.5 billion rupees, and electricity sales grew 11.3% over the period.
Why demand surged - and where it showed up
El Niño made conditions hotter and drier, and with India recording its weakest monsoon in more than a decade, the grid saw heavier use for cooling and irrigation. With hydropower and wind contributing less, the system leaned harder on coal plants, which anchor NTPC's portfolio.
Power ministry data show overall electricity generation in India increased 12% in the quarter, while coal-fired output grew 13%. NTPC also benefited from stronger call-ups for gas-fired power, even though gas is typically shunned by consumers because it costs more.

What this means for your portfolio
Of NTPC's standalone fleet, which totals almost 61 gigawatts, coal accounts for nearly 90%; when subsidiaries and joint ventures are included, coal's portion comes to roughly three quarters.
Strategy matters from here. NTPC is adding coal capacity in step with the government's energy security push while scaling up clean power, and it is also planning a nuclear program totaling 30 gigawatts targeted for 2047. The mix points to earnings still tied to coal in the near term, with a longer runway from renewables and nuclear as those projects come online.
