What happened
Beijing and Bern agreed on a protocol Friday that updates their free-trade pact. Once fully in force, goods covered by zero tariffs will represent over 99% of the value of trade between the two countries.
What companies and officials said
Beijing said Swiss firms aim to ramp up investment, notably in pharmaceuticals and in the production of machinery. Delegates from the private sector who traveled with Swiss President Guy Parmelin also highlighted finance, watchmaking, and the green transition as prime areas for deeper collaboration with Chinese partners, the Commerce Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Parmelin met President Xi Jinping and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on Friday. China Central Television reported that Xi expressed willingness to work with Switzerland on digital industries, green energy storage, and artificial intelligence, and called on Switzerland to help advance China's trade relationships with Europe.

Trade details and why it matters for your portfolio
Tariffs will be gradually removed on Swiss exports like coffee, machine tools, and watches, while Chinese sales of oilseed, vegetable oil, and pet food are slated to get better tariff treatment in Switzerland. The agreement broadens how Swiss sellers can reach China's market while Beijing works to deepen business with European economies.
For investors, that points to tailwinds for Swiss watchmakers and capital goods names tied to China demand, and a potential lift for Swiss firms linked to pharma and machinery if the planned investment materializes. It also nudges European trade exposure wider into China, a factor to watch in earnings for companies with meaningful China revenue.
